“Becoming Your Students’ Favorite Influencer”
Joseph Fisher
EDLD 5317 Section E21
August 29, 2025
Since I started my journey as a public-school educator in 2008, I have pursued an additional element of technology to engage my students and enhance learning music. As the technology world is ever-changing, I have never thought to publish my findings until recent interactions with professionals at my state’s music educator conference. Upon discovering that the unique methods I have designed were influential and useful to others, I believe that writing about the process will empower music educators to improve their own pedagogical approach (Taylor & Francis, 2021).
What is the topic of your article?
The article will explore how music educators can use and create videos to enhance student learning in both the classroom and the practice room. It will focus on the process of designing instructional videos tailored to specific repertoire and learning goals. In an effort to inspire and educate, I will also describe how to use technology to personalize the learning experience for a teacher’s student population and curricular goals.
The target audience will be elementary and secondary music educators who are seeking to improve student learning and engagement through the use of technology.
Where do you plan to submit (consider 2-3 options)
I have selected three journals to consider, two of which are available in print. I believe that these publications will meet my target audience of music educators and will have the most impact on the readers (Thibodeaux, 2017).
- PMEA News Journal: A peer-reviewed publication that has four editions per year and reaches fellow music educators within my state (Pennsylvania).
- NAfME Music Educators Journal: A peer-reviewed journal ideal for sharing innovative teaching practices and technology integration in music education.
- Yamaha Music Educator Hub: An online platform that features case studies and articles on music teaching innovations, including technology use. I am considering this after reading fellow content creator Tyler Swick’s (2022) article on adapting instruction for his paternity leave in 2018.
What is the connection to your innovation plan or initiative?
As I am in the EdTech program, I do not have an innovation plan. My initiative is to inspire music educators to embrace technology to improve student learning at both elementary and secondary levels. It is my mission to inspire teachers and future musicians using modern technology. By educating others in content creation, I am seeking to encourage a network of music educators who create media while building a library of video instruction that supports music literacy and student engagement.
How can this information help others?
The goal of the article will be to educate and empower musicians and music teachers to create digital content that is useful to their instructional context (Thibodeaux, 2017). In the article, I will provide access to resources and materials that teachers can use to personalize and bridge gaps in student performance and understanding. I will seek to encourage educators to embrace digital tools with confidence, even without formal training in media production.
Lessons learned or hoped to learn?
Through research and implementation, I have learned that instructional videos improve student engagement when aligned with curricular goals (Swick, 2022). Using videos created by a network of content creators in my classroom has produced observable results in the form of student performance and engagement.
I hope to learn the impact of empowering others to create digital media and receive feedback through the peer-review process and through contact information embedded in the article.
What digital resources will be included in your article? Briefly describe.
In the article, I will provide links to YouTube videos that I have created as well as exemplars from the music education community (Taylor & Francis, 2021). I will also provide a basic template for content creation, as well as Apple Motion Titles that generate a “bouncing ball” style for readers to utilize and personalize when creating. Links to royalty-free resources and tips to keep the reader from infringing on copyright when creating for their instructional context will be included to encourage ethical practices. If I am published in print, I will add a QR code to a LinkTree to assist readers in accessing these links and materials.
Think of your audience, digital presence, and the message you hope to communicate.
As I enter my eighteenth year in public education, I am aware of the workload placed on music teachers and the pressures they experience in their school communities. By providing a template and clear instructions, I seek to make video creation accessible and remove barriers that come with using and mastering new technology (Thibodeaux, 2017). I explored content creation out of necessity when I taught myself skills to adapt to the blended learning environment of 2020 and 2021. The purpose of writing will be to educate about the benefits media content has on this new generation of learners and encourage music teachers that it is accessible with the skills they have obtained from their training and career. Before submitting to a publication, I will share my article to be reviewed by music faculty members in my school district to receive feedback that will help me tailor my technology lingo so that I may reach a wider audience. (Taylor & Francis, 2021).
